Writer: support

Writer is a quiet writing app for iPhone: swaps for the words you're unsure of, a stash for what doesn't fit yet, Focus, footnotes, and clean exports when a piece is done.

Getting started

  • Start a piece: tap + on the library screen. The first line is the title.
  • Swap a word, sentence or paragraph: select it and tap Swap, then write your own option or tap Suggest alternatives. Tap the underlined text later to switch. Flatten keeps the one shown and drops the rest. Press and hold an option to remove it.
  • Stash a passage: select it and tap Stash. Open the stash from the bottom bar to put it back.
  • Focus: tap Focus, then the paragraphs you want to work on; everything else fades.
  • Footnotes: put the cursor where the note belongs, tap the superscript button, type the note.
  • Finish and share: open the outline (top right in a piece). Publish shows what's still open, then Share as Markdown, plain text, rich text for a blog editor, or a thread for X.

Your writing and backups

Everything is stored on your iPhone and included in its encrypted backups. Optionally, connect a GitHub repository from the bookshelf to keep a copy there with its history. Keep a copy of everything, also on the bookshelf, exports every piece as Markdown files.

Suggestions say they aren't available

They need an iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on (Settings, Apple Intelligence & Siri), with the iPhone and Siri set to the same supported language. After an iOS update the model can take a while to download: keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and charging, then check again on the bookshelf.

GitHub asks me to sign in again

Tap Sign in again in the sync sheet; nothing written on the iPhone is lost while signed out.
